About 50% of pregnant women are iron deficient. During pregnancy, iron need becomes double as your body absorbs iron more efficiently during pregnancy; therefore, it is important to consume more iron while you are pregnant to ensure that you and your baby are getting enough oxygen. Developing iron-deficiency anemia puts your baby at risk of being born too early or too small.
