FAQs

What is osteoporosis?

Loss of bone density leads to osteoporosis, which is a condition that weakens bones and makes them brittle. It develops slowly over several years and is noticed when the bone fractures.Regular exercise and consumption of calcium and vitamin D can keep your bones healthy and prevent osteoporosis.

What is the role of calcium in our body?

Almost 99% of the body’s calcium is present in the bones and teeth, while the remaining found in the blood and nerve cells, is essential for nerve conduction, muscle contraction and blood clotting. Insufficient intake of calcium throughout life leads to low bone mass and high risk of fractures and osteoporosis.

Do calcium requirements differ with age and gender?

Age Specific–Calcium absorption is as high as 60% in infants and young children. Absorption decreases to 15%–20% in adulthood and continues to decrease with increasing age; thereby increasing the demand for calcium replacement.

Gender Specific–Women are less likely to get sufficient amounts of calcium from food than men. They are also more prone to osteoporosis than men. Postmenopausal women, lose up to 5% of their bone mass each year which makes them highly vulnerable to osteoporosis. In female athletes, low bone-mineral density, menstrual irregularities, certain dietary patterns, and a history of prior stress fractures, increases the risk of future stress fractures.Higher calcium intakes are recommended in women older than 50 years and in both men and women older than 70 years.

Do pregnant women need calcium supplementation?

Starting from the third trimester of pregnancy and throughout lactation, the maternal calcium stores are depleted and mothers often tend to have a lowered bone mineral density. Also, the unborn fetus and the new-born infant are dependent on their mothers to fulfill their calcium needs. Thus, sufficient intake of calcium by the mother during this period can improve bone health of both, the mother as well as the child.

What is pre-eclampsia and how is it related to calcium supplementation?

Pre-eclampsia is a condition that occurs only during pregnancy, wherein there is a rise in blood pressure and presence of protein in the urine. If left uncontrolled it can lead to maternal death and preterm births. Calcium supplementation improves calcium intake and consequently reduces the risk of pre-eclampsia during pregnancy.

How does vitamin D help in maintaining bone health?

Vitamin D is the regulator of calcium and phosphate in the body. It is obtained from food and produced by skin on exposure to sunlight and improves absorption of calcium. Sufficient consumption of calcium and vitamin D, along with physical activity, can reduce the risk of osteoporosis in later life.

What is Calcivita Forte?

Calcivita Forte is a healthy combination of 600 mg elemental calcium, 1500 mg calcium carbonate and vitamin D 200 IU per capsule for improved bone health.

How does Calcivita Forte benefit bone health?

Calcivita Forte, contains calcium and vitamin D. Vitamin D helps in absorption of calcium which in turn makes the bones denser and stronger. Together these nutrients prevent the future risk of osteoporosis and fractures and help you live a healthy and happy life.
